L.A. Breaks 97-year Rainfall Record as Massive Storm Floods City

On Sunday, a winter storm moved through the region, causing flooding and heavy rain across large swathes of Los Angeles and setting a 97-year-old single-day precipitation record.

The day started out clear and bright, with a golden sunrise illuminating the sky, but by noon raindrops began to fall, and by night the drizzle turned into a heavy rain.

Reports of damage poured in late Sunday as the slow-moving storm moved steadily across Southern California, breaking a 97-year rainfall record in downtown Los Angeles.

In Studio City, a debris flow sent mud and other objects into the 11900 block of Rockridge Road, damaging at least two homes, Los Angeles firefighters said. All nine homes on Rockridge Road were evacuated, including pets, “in case further soil destabilization causes additional spills,” firefighters said. There were no injuries. 16 residents were evacuated.

On Sunday, 4.1 inches of rain fell in downtown Los Angeles, breaking the previous calendar day record set on February 4, 1927, when 2.55 inches of rain was recorded. Sunday was the third wettest February day on record and the 10th wettest day of the year since record-keeping began in 1877, according to the National Weather Service. They were lined up. (The wettest day in history was March 2, 1938, with 5.88 inches of precipitation falling that day.)

Although several schools announced Monday closures, the majority of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools remain open as of this writing.
