The iconic ’90s rocker has passed away just days after announcing a malignant brain tumor diagnosis.
Jennifer Finch, the bassist for the alternative rock band L7, has died at the age of 59. This was confirmed in a statement shared on her social media earlier today.
“We’re heartbroken to share the loss of our partner, sister, daughter, and friend, Jennifer Precious Finch,” the statement expressed.
“The impact she’s had on music is remarkable, but on our lives, it’s been even more profound. We’re truly grateful for the kindness shown during this time and appreciate the space to heal privately.”
Just four days prior, Finch had disclosed her battle with an aggressive brain tumor, and her fellow ’90s musicians and fans rallied in support as she undertook various surgeries to combat the illness.
She had been set to join her bandmates for “The Last Hurley” farewell tour later this year.
However, the versatile artist—also recognized for her photography and writing—had reported “serious complications” stemming from her condition.
In a post promoting a GoFundMe for her ongoing treatment, family members mentioned that despite initial hopes for successful early treatment, including radiation, she faced a “relentless series of setbacks.”
“After her diagnosis, there was genuine hope for a return to a normal life,” the Instagram update noted.
“But instead, complications have led to several surgeries, and Jennifer now has significant physical challenges requiring constant care that love and support alone can’t provide.”
“We’re reaching out to the community for help.”
Numerous fellow rockers, including members from Garbage and Pearl Jam, have shown their support, helping the fundraiser approach its $350,000 goal.
Amid the health crisis, Finch appeared to maintain a positive spirit, as evidenced by a recent photo in which she showed off her surgical scars from her hospital bed.
Her L7 bandmates, Donita Sparks, Susie Gardner, and Demetra Plakas, encouraged her to keep on with the Last Hurley tour, slated to start in October for the final U.S. dates.
“This tour was something planned when all four of us were in good health,” the band mentioned on their social media.
“While Jennifer can’t join us for the U.S. tour, she has requested that we continue as planned.”
“We want to honor her wishes, putting her health and care first.”
L7 were pioneers in the ’90s grunge scene alongside bands like Nirvana and Bikini Kill. They broke into the mainstream with their 1992 hit “Pretend We’re Dead,” but by 2001, they had announced an “indefinite hiatus.” After reuniting in 2014, they have been consistently touring, playing their own shows and festival slots worldwide.
