LA councilwoman criticized for hiring police for Mexican Independence event using taxpayer money.

A member of the Los Angeles City Council, Eunice Hernandez, is facing accusations of hypocrisy for hiring police officers to ensure security at her events while opposing police funding for community safety. Hernandez, who has actively campaigned against police in Los Angeles, reportedly arranged for 13 armed LAPD officers at a Mexican Independence Day celebration at City Hall, costing taxpayers $135,000 in overtime.

The event, titled “El Grito 2025,” is expected to draw around 500 attendees, meaning that Hernandez essentially spent about $270 on police protection for each individual present that day. This spending contrasts sharply with her stance, as she has advocated for redirecting police funding to support housing, education, and public health initiatives.

Ironically, just a year earlier, Hernandez had voted against a City Council contract that would have allowed the LAPD to provide security at special events, including the very celebration she engaged with. This prompted the Los Angeles Police Protective League to label her actions as hypocritical, emphasizing that while she votes to defund police, she doesn’t hesitate to call for their protection at public events.

The union criticized Hernandez for benefiting from police presence while simultaneously opposing their funding, suggesting a disconnect between her rhetoric and actions. Her biography indicates that she grew up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants and has positioned herself as a community organizer.

Despite these claims, there has been no response from Hernandez regarding the criticisms leveled against her.
