La Mesa Police Officer Killed While Assisting Motorist
The La Mesa Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Lauren Craven, who tragically lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while aiding a motorist.
California city officials confirmed the news via a Facebook post late Monday night, revealing that Officer Craven was involved in a collision on I-8 eastbound at Fairmont Avenue while returning to La Mesa from the San Diego Central Jail.
After she exited her vehicle to offer help, another driver struck her, resulting in her untimely death.
Local authorities reported that Officer Craven was only 25 years old. She had been with the La Mesa Police Department since February 2024 and is survived by her parents, sister, and partner.
In the same incident, 19-year-old Devionte Morris also lost his life.
“This is a very tragic situation,” La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney stated at a news conference. “Our deepest condolences go out to the La Mesa Police Department, our law enforcement colleagues, and the family and loved ones of the other person who tragically lost his life in this incident.”
California Highway Patrol is currently examining the initial crash that led to the fallout. Four other people sustained injuries, with one still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon.
The La Mesa Police Department shared on Facebook that Officer Craven’s actions reflect her dedication to serving others. They highlighted her tenacity, courage, and compassion, attributes that not only inspired her colleagues but also strengthened the community she served.
