Protests Turn Violent in Los Angeles
Violence flared during the No Kings rally in downtown Los Angeles, leading to numerous arrests. The Department of Homeland Security reported that on Saturday evening, around 1,000 individuals gathered near a federal building, resulting in a tense situation.
According to their statement, “The rioters are throwing rocks, bottles, and cement blocks at officers. Two officers who were hit by the cement blocks are receiving medical treatment.” The escalation prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to announce that they had made 75 arrests after issuing a dispersal order at 5:30 p.m.
The police further noted, “Several splinter groups remain in the Civic Center area several hours after the demonstration ended. Multiple dispersal orders have been issued and multiple arrests have been made.” In total, 66 adults and eight juveniles were apprehended for failing to disperse, with an additional arrest made for possession of a dirk or dagger.
Meanwhile, video footage surfaced showing individuals spray-painting a federal building, with one person writing, “Kill your local ICE agent.” The Department of Homeland Security criticized these actions as “shameful,” emphasizing the serious threats faced by ICE law enforcement officers while performing their duties.
Federal agents began arresting individuals who had assaulted officers during the incident, with First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri warning those involved, “We have you on video. We will find you and arrest you. You have been warned.”
In addition to Los Angeles, No Kings rallies took place in various cities across the country that weekend. Organizers claimed that over 8 million people joined approximately 3,300 rallies nationwide, dubbing it “the largest single-day nonviolent protest in modern American history.”
In New York City, some attendees voiced anti-communist sentiments while the police reported that tens of thousands demonstrated “peacefully” without any arrests. However, tensions were visible across the nation, including in Portland, where protesters breached a gate at an immigration detention center.
