Labor Day train shooting in Chicago claims the life of four passengers

Four people were shot and killed on a train near Chicago on Monday morning, according to Illinois authorities.

Authorities were called to the station in the village of Forest Park in Cook County around 5:30 a.m. Monday when the shooting happened on a CTA Blue Line train.

Three were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fourth victim died at a local hospital. Forest Park Police Deputy Chief Chris Chin told reporters that no additional information about the victims was available at this time.

The suspect fled the scene but was eventually arrested by authorities, who reportedly found him on a CTA Pink Line train, according to FOX 32 Chicago.

“A weapon has been recovered,” Chin said. “There is no immediate threat. This appears to be an isolated incident that occurred on this unfortunate day.”

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins said the Forest Park station has been receiving an unusually high number of emergency calls.

“It's a terrible tragedy that four people have been killed over Labor Day weekend,” Hoskins said. “Our police department and fire department have been out here more than probably any other place in our jurisdiction.”

The train is on the tracks

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) condemned the shooting in a statement on Monday. (FOX 32 Chicago)

In a statement, the CTA called the shooting “heinous and egregious” and pledged to cooperate with law enforcement in their investigation.

“Such a heinous and egregious act of violence should never have taken place on a public transport train,” the group said.
