The Department of Labor (DOL) has initiated an enforcement campaign instructing federal agencies to revise their foreign worker programs based on President Donald Trump’s recent statement, which suggests that these programs might be harming American employees.
Known as “Project Firewall,” the initiative was announced last Friday. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez Deremar emphasized that the focus would be on tackling “fraud and abuse” within the H-1B visa program, ensuring that highly skilled jobs are prioritized for American workers first.
“The Trump administration is committed to preventing the neglect of American workers. As we work to regain economic stability, it’s crucial to protect what truly matters—our workers,” he said. “By eliminating fraud and abuse, the DOL and its partners will ensure that high-skill positions are filled by Americans primarily.”
This initiative followed Trump’s signing of a declaration aimed at limiting the entry of certain non-immigrant workers, which was reported under the title by Neil Munro of Breitbart News. Trump’s declaration also imposes a fee of $100,000 for every foreign worker hired through the H-1B program.
Through Project Firewall, the DOL plans to conduct employer surveys to enhance compliance with the H-1B program.
For the first time in DOL history, Chavez Deremar will personally oversee the start of investigations, as highlighted in the press release.
According to the department, any violations could result in back wages owed to affected workers, civil penalties, or restrictions on future use of the H-1B program. Additionally, the DOL will collaborate with relevant government agencies, as allowed by law, to combat discrimination against American workers and ensure the enforcement of legal standards with full federal authority.
