Labour Party poised to win UK government after 14 years of Conservative Party rule

Labour is expected to win a landslide victory on Thursday night, bringing to an end 14 years of Conservative rule in Britain.

The Labour Party is expected to win 410 seats in the House of Commons, well above the 326 needed for a majority. Nationwide exit poll Poll conducted by Ipsos for BBC, ITV News and Sky News.

The Conservative Party is expected to win 131 of the 650 seats, with smaller parties holding the rest.

These polls, conducted in polling stations across the UK, have historically provided an accurate snapshot of the final election result.

Six weeks ago, Conservative Party leader and Chancellor Rishi Sunak called a surprise general election, the timing of which came as a surprise given the party’s relative unpopularity in the UK.

The Conservative party has weathered several scandals, including Liz Truss’s short-lived tenure as prime minister and Boris Johnson’s resignation following allegations that he partyed in No 10 Downing Street during the pandemic.

A Labour victory would buck the recent rightward shift seen in other European countries such as France, but the same populist tendencies are strong in Britain and exit polls show voters acted on widely reported dissatisfaction with the Conservative government’s handling of a host of issues, including the high cost of living and immigration levels.

Labour leader Keir Starmer is expected to become the country’s next prime minister.

“I want to thank everyone who supported Labour in this election, voted for us and put their faith in a changed Labour party,” Starmer said.Posted on social platform X.
