Lady Gaga shares that she used lithium during the filming of 'A Star Is Born'

Lady Gaga Opens Up About “A Star Is Born” Experience

In a recent interview, Lady Gaga, now 39, shared some candid insights about her time filming “A Star Is Born.” She revealed that she was taking lithium during the production of the 2018 movie, something she has kept private until now.

“I played ‘A Star Is Born’ on lithium,” Gaga admitted, though she has not disclosed the specifics of her diagnosis. This film marked a significant milestone for her, being her first lead role in a feature film. It turned out to be a major success, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, along with a win for Best Original Song for “Shallow.”

While working on the film, Gaga was also in the middle of her Joanne World Tour. In February 2018, she made the difficult call to cancel the remaining tour dates, later stating that she had to seek psychiatric treatment.

One moment stood out to her: “One day, my sister said, ‘I’m never going to see her again,'” at which point she realized she needed help. “There was a day when I went to the hospital for psychiatric treatment. I needed to rest. I couldn’t do anything… I completely crashed. It was really scary. There were times when I thought I would never recover. … I feel really lucky to be alive,” she reflected.

Shortly after this challenging period, she met her fiancé, Michael Polanski. She expressed how much having someone who truly cared about her made a significant difference in her healing process.

Gaga released her seventh studio album, titled “Mayhem,” in March 2025, and is currently on tour with “The Mayhem Ball.” Interestingly, Polanski helped execute produce this album, which garnered seven Grammy nominations.

Speculation about their relationship began when they were spotted together on New Year’s Eve in 2019, blossoming into something more as Gaga later posted a photo of the two on a boat in early 2020. She described that time spent together during the pandemic as “really special,” emphasizing how it allowed her to focus on her relationships in a way she hadn’t been able to before.

After getting engaged earlier this year, they made their red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival during the premiere of “Joker: Folie à Deux” in September 2024.
