In addition to mental health support, Mercury One also funded another nonprofit that provides “kids’ sports” when funding dried up.

“A lot of kids can’t even get into Lahaina and are crying because of what they saw that day a year ago,” JP says.

“So many people feel abandoned by the government. They feel isolated. They feel like no one is talking about them anymore,” JP said, adding that it was clear “the government has forgotten about them”.

To make matters worse, yesterday the Governor chose to mention climate change.

“The governor said just yesterday, ‘I know you love Front Street, but we need to remember that climate change is taking away Front Street,'” JP says.

“What kind of leader are you to say that on the one-year anniversary?” he asked in disgust. “These people are trying to find hope. Of the 11,000 people who lived there and were displaced, only about 3,000 remain because they had to move to find work.”
