Residents near Lake Hollywood Park are expressing their outrage after witnessing fruit vendors reportedly using the park as a restroom before selling food.
Photos obtained by local media seem to depict unlicensed sellers taking advantage of the bushes in the area, only to return and prepare fruit for customers.
Community members have documented these actions, stating that this has been occurring for years as officials have done little to combat the problem. “It’s disgusting,” said resident Cindy Cobb, who emphasized the absence of restrooms in the park, making it impossible for anyone to wash their hands.
Health officials have cautioned that fresh produce can be easily contaminated if proper hygiene isn’t followed. One concerning aspect is that parasite cyclospora can spread when food is tainted by human waste, which poses a significant health risk.
Thousands visit the park each week, and locals have reported that vendors regularly disappear into foliage to relieve themselves before returning to prepare ready-to-eat items.
Repeated complaints have been made to various city and county agencies, yet residents feel their concerns are going unanswered. They received a response indicating that their complaint had been logged but would take time to address due to a backlog of similar issues.
“What we really object to is the city’s failure to enforce regulations,” Cobb remarked, urging that this collective issue poses health risks for the public.
Furthermore, residents argue that the improper disposal of wastewater has created additional concerns, including fire hazards in the area.
Scott Myers, a local congressional candidate, highlighted the risks faced by unsuspecting visitors seeking fresh fruit from vendors who lack regulation or oversight. He noted that potential exploitation of workers could be taking place, suggesting that many of the vendors are part of a larger operation.
