Lakers capitalize on Rockets missing Kevin Durant in Game 1 victory

Playoff Highlights: Lakers Take Game 1 Against Rockets

In Los Angeles, Luke Kennard led the Lakers with a playoff career-high of 27 points, while LeBron James contributed 19 points and 13 assists. Despite missing their top two scorers, the Lakers capitalized on Kevin Durant’s absence, defeating the Houston Rockets 107-98 in the first game of their playoff series on Saturday night.

Deandre Ayton also made a significant impact, scoring 19 points and securing 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who are seeded fourth. Both teams faced challenges as they began the series without key players; Luka Doncic and Austin Reeves have been sidelined since April 2 due to injuries, and Durant suffered a right knee contusion during the game.

The Rockets’ defense put pressure on the Lakers, limiting them to a shooting percentage of 37.6%. Still, Los Angeles managed to shoot 60.6% overall, which was a noticeable advantage.

Even with the Lakers attempting only 66 shots—marking the fewest in an NBA game in the last three seasons—they managed to pull off the win, despite conceding 21 offensive rebounds.

In reflecting on the team’s performance, James, now in his 19th NBA postseason, commented, “That’s what the collective group should be. When you don’t have as much firepower as we do right now, we all have to do our job and protect each other on both ends. I think we did that tonight.”

For the Rockets, Alperen Sengan scored 19 points, while Jabari Smith Jr. added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Armen Thompson also contributed with 17 points.

Game 2 is set for Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

The Lakers brought Kennard on board from Atlanta in early February. Known as the NBA’s most accurate three-point shooter, he has become a crucial backup player and stepped up significantly in the lead-up to the playoffs, making four three-pointers in this game and hitting nine of his first twelve shots.

Durant suffered a knee injury when he bumped into a teammate during practice. Despite Reid Shepard contributing 17 points on five three-pointers, the Rockets struggled with consistency in their scoring.

Houston head coach Ime Udoka noted, “We won in many areas, but shot poorly. It’s going to be tough to win like that, but there were things we missed.”

Marcus Smart also aided the Lakers’ cause with 15 points and eight assists, including four three-pointers. He previously mentioned that success would hinge on “willpower,” and clearly, the Lakers showcased that strong spirit from the get-go.

Interestingly, Bronny James played alongside his father for the first time in his playoff career, a notable moment in their family’s basketball legacy.
