JJ Redick Supports Autism Awareness with Custom Sneakers

On Monday night at Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick sported custom sneakers for a meaningful initiative.

Redick wore specially designed Nike shoes crafted by Salt Lake City artist John Miller. This gesture was part of a campaign by the NBA and the NBA Coaches Association recognizing Autism Inclusion Month.

The design featured the Lakers’ purple and gold colors, intertwining with a rainbow infinity symbol, which represents pride and continuity for the autism community.

“It’s a great cause,” Redick commented, underscoring its importance for recognition and acceptance.

He paused to reflect on his teenage years, recalling that he spent free time in high school assisting classmates with special needs. “I had a free period in third and fourth grade, and I spent those two years working with children with special needs,” he said, highlighting a particular student he helped with math. “It was a really humbling experience.”

Redick also shared how his friendship with NBA player Joe Ingles, who is navigating life with an autistic son, made the cause feel more personal and relatable for him.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I believe all people are equal and loved,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to inclusivity.

This initiative is also connected to the To Max Foundation, which was established by Utah Jazz assistant Scott Morrison and his wife after their son was diagnosed with autism in 2022.

Coaches from all 30 NBA teams participated in the autism awareness campaign.

The sneakers worn during the game will be signed and later auctioned at Sotheby’s in May, with the funds raised directed toward enhancing access, opportunities, and support for families dealing with autism quietly and without assistance.
