Speculation about the Lakers is heating up again.
This week, conversations surrounding potential interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo have become a hot topic on sports radio. However, things took a new turn when The Athletic’s Sam Amick remarked that this offseason, the Bucks are expected to “pursue with all their might” a superstar.
Interestingly, the Lakers were given a 22-1 chance for Giannis by a Las Vegas player, which, while long, isn’t entirely out of the question. If you look back at NBA history, superstars often gravitate towards Los Angeles, as if drawn by the allure of Hollywood.
From the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James, and now Luka Doncic, the Lakers have been a destination for basketball legends for decades.
So, what about the “Greek Freak”? Antetokounmpo has made it clear that his future hinges on chasing championships. The Lakers and the Bucks each have one title this decade, but only one has the celebrity culture and the glamorous atmosphere that Los Angeles offers. It’s not only about the rings; there’s a level of relevance attached to playing in L.A.
The actual challenge may not be about desire but rather the cost involved. Would the Bucks even consider a trade package centered around Austin Reaves along with several first-round picks? Reaves, while emerging as a promising player, is also looking for a significant contract extension. Paying him $241 million is a different conversation than bringing Giannis on board. The Lakers think that combining Doncic’s offensive prowess with Giannis’ defensive intensity would create a dynamic duo—one that could dominate on the court.
Yet, skepticism lingers. Teams like the Rockets, Spurs, Hawks, and Thunder have younger talents and more attractive draft picks to offer for Giannis. Other franchises, including the Knicks, Heat, and Warriors, have shown interest in trading for him as well.
Ultimately, the Lakers’ rumors are unlikely to fade quietly. If Giannis decides to push for a move to Los Angeles, echoing Anthony Davis’s situation in 2019, the Lakers will be eager to engage with the Bucks, as is their historical tendency.
