Lakers ‘heartbroken’ over death of 2011 draft pick at age 33

Former NBA player Darius Morris passed away on Saturday at the age of 33.

Morris was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris,” the family said in a statement, according to TMZ. “His family asks that their wishes for privacy and grace be respected during this time of transition.”

His first NBA team also posted a tribute to him on social media.

“We are saddened by the passing of Darius Morris,” the organization said in a statement. Posted in Xpreviously posted on Twitter a photo of Morris celebrating with a purple heart and coat.

Morris spent two seasons with the Lakers between the pro club and its G League affiliate before signing with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013. He also played for the Clippers and Grizzlies on a 10-day contract that season.

He played his final NBA season with the Brooklyn Nets in 2014-15.

He played in 132 games in the NBA, starting 17 of them, all in the 2012-13 season.

He averaged 3.3 points per game, but his best performance was with the Lakers in 2013, when he scored 24 points in the first round of the playoffs against the San Antonio Spurs. This was a career high, including regular season games.

Morris played two seasons at the University of Michigan, setting the school record for most assists in a single season with 235 assists as a sophomore. That record has since been broken.

His 15 points per game in the 2010-11 season was also a team high.

The cause of death has not been made public.
