Lamar Jackson left the Ravens’ first practice of training camp just an hour into the game because he is battling an illness.
The league’s reigning MVP did not practice with the team on Monday or Tuesday and made his first appearance on Wednesday but appeared “tired” when he left the field after an hour. According to ESPN:.
The 27-year-old was sharing snaps with backup quarterback Josh Johnson but was reportedly not feeling well.
Jackson completed one pass and had one interception, an overthrow to veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey.
Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken told reporters he doesn’t think the offense will be slowed down by Jackson’s absence.
“We’ve had a whole offseason and Lamar’s been a part of it,” Monken said. “I’m happy to have him back today, but I don’t think we’re behind. We’re not stopping. We’re still in the process of getting going.”
“We’re definitely going to have him back,” he continued. “I know I’m being a little cocky. I’m not going to know until I ask him how he feels. But he performed great in the meeting. When we were on the field at the start of the game. [of practice]He said he felt good.”
Baltimore opens the preseason on Aug. 9 against the Eagles, but Jackson is unlikely to step on the field until the final preseason tuneup game.
The Ravens open the regular season on Sept. 5 against the defending champion Chiefs, but are slightly underdogs on the road in a rematch of the AFC Championship Game.
Baltimore earned the No. 1 seed in the conference last season thanks to Jackson’s performance.
