NBA Trade: LaMelo Ball Moves to Minnesota Timberwolves
In a significant shake-up, the Charlotte Hornets have traded LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves, creating a dynamic duo with Anthony Edwards, the top pick from the same draft class in 2020. This deal, reported on Thursday, aims to enhance Minnesota’s playoff aspirations.
LaMelo Ball, who was named Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season, has shown impressive stats with an average of 20.8 points and 7.3 assists per game, positioning him as one of the league’s top guards. Nonetheless, injuries have hampered his appearances significantly, limiting him to just 105 games from the start of the 2022-23 season through 2024-25.
The Hornets, struggling to reach the playoffs since the 2015-16 season, have opted to trade Ball, alongside Josh Green, to acquire Naz Reid and several draft picks, including an unprotected first-rounder in 2033 and multiple other first and second-round picks. This adds to their existing collection of assets, with six first-round picks and eight second-round picks lined up over the next three years, raising questions about their confidence in Ball’s durability.
On the flip side, the Timberwolves have demonstrated consistent playoff presence, making the postseason for five consecutive years and reaching the Western Conference Finals in both 2024 and 2025. Adding Ball to pair with Edwards, who averaged a career-high 28.8 points last season, makes strategic sense.
Before the trade, Ball had expressed optimism about the Hornets’ future, noting a positive trajectory for the team and his role within it. He signed a lucrative five-year, $260 million contract extension in 2023, reflecting his belief in the organization.
While the decision to trade Ball might seem drastic, it appears to be a calculated move by the Hornets, aiming to position themselves better in the long run. Fans will be watching closely to see how this unfold for both players and franchises moving forward.
