Hornets’ New Direction Amid Injury Challenges
The Charlotte Hornets aimed to make a significant impact in the 2025 NBA Draft. With LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller as key players, they were in search of a perfect complement—someone who could really bind the team together. Enter Duke University’s Con Knuppel. His basketball intelligence, knack for three-point shooting, and team-oriented play made him a prospect who could elevate Ball and Miller.
However, the season took an unexpected turn, shaking up those plans dramatically. With LaMelo Ball injuring himself again, the Hornets now face some uncomfortable truths. They may need to re-evaluate their strategy, possibly trading Ball and fully committing to Knuppel’s potential as a leader.
This shift was evident in Thursday’s game, where the Hornets triumphed over the Bucks, winning 111-100. The matchup provided a unique chance to compete against a team also struggling with injuries, and Charlotte seized the moment. Knuppel stood out, contributing 16 points and six rebounds. While Miles Bridges led in scoring, it was Knuppel who took charge on the court, particularly during the past five games without Ball.
The initial expectation was for Knuppel to merely serve as an option for Ball, facilitating some perimeter shooting. Yet he’s emerged as more than just a spot-up shooter. He’s making his own shots, slicing through defenses, and delivering smart passes, which has also greatly aided rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner.
It may be premature to draw grand conclusions, but the promising start from the Hornets’ draft picks is notable. Knuppel seems poised to become a star, and Kalkbrenner has stepped into a center role the team desperately needed, showing strong numbers with a near double-double average. Even Knuppel’s former teammate, Theon James, is finding his footing, performing well while also playing stout perimeter defense.
Brandon Miller’s forthcoming return from injury is also expected to add depth, acting as a more athletic wing to complement Knuppel’s work in the paint and his shooting abilities.
This conundrum throws LaMelo Ball’s role into a peculiar light. The issue is, Ball is very ball-dominant. He doesn’t just want to control the play; he genuinely needs to. Everything flows through him. His passing ability and court vision are impressive, yet the offense has its restrictions. Often, players aren’t taking shots because they want to; it’s more due to Ball permitting them. He seems most comfortable firing away from various spots on the court, simply because he can.
It’s hard to envision a scenario where Ball comes back from his injury and Knuppel continues to shine in his current role. With each game that passes, Knuppel’s ability to direct the offense becomes more pronounced, creating some conflicts within a ball-centric system.
Then there’s the persistent issue of health. Ball’s ankle problems have marred his career so far. Since being named an All-Star in 2021-22, he’s averaged just 35 games a year. His absence significantly affects the Hornets’ gameplay. They’ve had to switch between styles—high movement when Ball’s out and a more focused approach when he returns—leading to an inconsistency that hampers cohesion.
This struggle for continuity is crucial. Over the past three years, it was necessary because the team faltered without Ball. He was pretty much their go-to for scoring and creating winning opportunities. However, the landscape is changing. With Knuppel and Kalkbrenner on board, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the team might thrive better with a more defensively-minded point guard rather than someone solely focused on offense.
It may be time for the Hornets to consider trading LaMelo Ball.
This reality is certainly complicated due to his history of injuries. Still, when healthy, he can be a game-changer. While Charlotte might not acquire a superstar in return, dealing Ball could enable the team to evolve and move forward without him, allowing him to find a better fit where his talents are more useful. Perhaps joining a more established team with veteran players could lighten the load for him. Although he feels like the star player, in Charlotte, he has become somewhat of an outlier on a young squad.
The Hornets’ recent narrative has revolved around LaMelo Ball, but it appears their future is steering away from him. We are entering a new chapter with Knuppel and Miller stepping into the spotlight, while Bridges and Kalkbrenner take on supporting roles. Trading away their top player might be difficult for the Hornets to embrace now, yet it could be a pivotal step toward long-term success.
