Yamal on the Edge of Soccer Greatness
Spain’s Lamine Yamal is just one victory away from achieving soccer greatness. Yet, this remarkable feat hinges on overcoming his childhood idol, Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
“It’s tough to express,” Yamal shared about facing Messi in the World Cup final on Sunday.
Yamal regards Messi as the greatest player ever. “What he’s accomplishing at 39 is incredible. He’s still scoring, leading Argentina, showing the world why he’s considered the GOAT,” he expressed on social media. “As a soccer fan, it’s difficult not to admire him,” he added.
Yamal’s admiration for Messi dates back to his infancy, and a recent social media post featured a sweet photo of the two from when Yamal was just a toddler.
This Sunday could very well mark Messi’s final appearance in a World Cup. Amidst this shift, Messi’s longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo recently announced that this tournament would be his last at the age of 41.
With Ronaldo stepping away and uncertainty surrounding Messi’s future, the landscape of soccer seems to be evolving.
Yamal is one of the promising talents emerging in the sport. Since joining Barcelona in 2014, he’s often been compared to Messi. Despite his admiration, Yamal knows that personal sentiments must take a backseat as he represents his country on the field.
“We have great respect for Messi and Argentina, but our goal is to bring the World Cup home,” Yamal noted. “Sometimes, in soccer, you just have to set your emotions aside to focus on the game.”
