Lane Kiffin’s Departure from Ole Miss to LSU
Lane Kiffin made the decision to leave Ole Miss for LSU, but he didn’t intend to leave at this moment. He holds the university’s athletic director, Keith Carter, responsible for his abrupt departure.
Upon announcing his move to Baton Rouge, Kiffin expressed his frustration with Carter for not permitting him to stay at Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff (CFP). In his social media post, he stated, “I aimed to finish a historical sixth season with our current team, guiding Ole Miss to the playoffs and building upon the tremendous success we’ve had. I wanted to ensure the program was protected in areas of concern while pouring everything into a playoff run.” He continued, “Despite my request to Mr. Keith Carter to let me continue coaching for the benefit of the team’s performance, my request was denied, which regrettably means that the Egg Bowl will be my last game coaching the Rebels.”
This situation sparked controversy during a recent meeting. Ole Miss, boasting an 11-1 record and likely headed to the CFP, desired Kiffin to either stay or leave without delay, looking for clarity on the continuity of the coaching staff under his leadership.
On the other hand, Kiffin was prepared to part ways after either a playoff elimination or potentially winning a title. Reports suggest that he threatened to take significant actions against the staff if Ole Miss attempted to block his departure.
As Kiffin steps away, defensive coordinator Pete Golding is expected to take over as head coach for Ole Miss, following a victory against Mississippi State.
Kiffin has expressed his ongoing support for his former team, saying, “While I’m excited about the new chapter at LSU, I will always treasure the six amazing years with Ole Miss and will do everything possible to assist in achieving a championship for Oxford.”
