Lane Kiffin expresses disappointment over not completing Ole Miss matters during LSU introduction

Lane Kiffin made it clear who prevented him from coaching Ole Miss during their national title opportunity, expressing his respect for that choice.

The college football landscape is buzzing following Kiffin’s exit from Oxford as he took on the role of head coach for the LSU Tigers on Monday.

Many criticized Kiffin for leaving the Rebels just before the College Football Playoff.

“Leaving Ole Miss was incredibly tough,” Kiffin shared during his introductory press conference. “It wasn’t an easy choice, but we tried everything to coach our players through the playoffs. Ultimately, it was their decision, and I completely respect that.”

He noted that he only found out about his inability to coach in the postseason 30 minutes before the team meeting regarding his departure.

“As you can see, the announcement of the team meeting was delayed because we were trying to finalize details,” Kiffin remarked. “I’m thankful to the Prime Minister, and [athletic director] Keith Carter for listening to our ideas. We had a plan to support our local players in the playoffs. It’s their decision, and I respect that.”

“While it might seem logical to those outside the situation why it was best to gather everyone for the playoffs, it’s important to remember he has to live there, and I totally respect his judgment,” he added.

Kiffin echoed similar sentiments in an ESPN interview before transitioning to Louisiana.

On Monday, he discussed the new opportunity at LSU, describing the school and its program as distinctly different.

“I’ve been observing this place for a long time and have stood on the sidelines across from this stadium; it’s just different. That’s why we’re here,” he stated.

LSU athletic director Virge Ausberry mentioned that Kiffin was their top choice from the outset.

There had been weeks of uncertainty around Kiffin’s future at Ole Miss, with speculation about whether he would continue with the Rebels or shift to LSU or Florida, but he ultimately pulled out of the running.

Kiffin highlighted several appealing aspects of LSU, including their NIL strategy, the enthusiasm he sensed during discussions with Ausberry, and the cooperation among key figures in the program.

“It’s time for LSU to reclaim its position as the premier program in college football, and that’s our mission here,” Kiffin stated.
