The Egg Bowl Chaos
The Egg Bowl turned chaotic in unexpected ways.
During a tense moment late in the first half of the rivalry game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State, things got heated. With Ole Miss leading 14-7 and just under four minutes on the clock, Bulldogs linebacker Malik Sila got a hold of Trinidad Chambliss’ arm while he was attempting to throw. What followed next was a scramble that can only be described as pandemonium.
Then a minor push escalated quickly. Ole Miss tight end Daquan Wright and Mississippi State linebacker Tyler Lockhart ended up throwing punches, and before we knew it, the entire Bulldogs bench rushed the field.
Even with penalty flags flying, Ole Miss players stood their ground.
Once officials managed to restore some order, they had a lot to clarify. They reviewed the play and concluded that Chambliss was in a throwing motion, resulting in the call of an incomplete pass. Following that, both teams faced personal fouls and penalties were issued to several players on each side.
The skirmish surely took its toll on emotions, especially for Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin. He was visibly upset while heading to the locker room at halftime.
“We’re just trying to play clean football. We’re looking to execute and just play well,” he shared in a post-game interview. “To see the whole side get involved, including the athletic director? I’ve never experienced anything like it. We want to be here to play football, not to get involved in fights.”
Kiffin reassured that his team would recover from the incident, stating, “We’ll be fine. Our guys stayed on the sideline without getting mixed up in it.”
Interestingly, before the game kicked off, Kiffin had made accusations about Mississippi State fans allegedly breaching the Rebels’ locker room to steal Chambliss’ jersey. It’s just one more layer in a rivalry that’s officially known as the “Battle of the Golden Egg,” which has seen its share of heated exchanges since it began back in 1901.
This year, the stakes are particularly high for Ole Miss as they enter the game at 10-1 and ranked No. 7 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, with a shot at the postseason on the line.
Furthermore, there’s been a lot of buzz about Kiffin’s future, with many wondering what might happen next after this game. An announcement is said to be coming soon.
