LAPD union leader cautions violent protesters about arrests and legal action

Los Angeles Police Union Leader Issues Strong Warnings Amid Protests

In Los Angeles, the director of the Police Department’s union has criticized city and state officials, cautioning against an anti-immigrant stance amidst ongoing customs enforcement riots. Jamie McBride, a LAPD detective with 35 years under his belt, leads the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which represents city officers.

“If you come here and engage in violence during a protest, be prepared for serious consequences—we will track you down,” he asserted. He indicated that LAPD officers have managed to cope during the recent unrest, which followed the arrests of undocumented immigrants within the city. The police, he noted, are committed to addressing harmful behaviors that disrupt the community.

McBride’s stern warnings didn’t stop there. He emphasized that individuals who assault officers or partake in criminal acts should not expect leniency. “It’s simple—if you’re involved in illegal activities, don’t be surprised when you face arrest,” he said, reinforcing that law enforcement will use necessary measures when needed.

He also pointed out that Los Angeles’ new district attorney, Nathan Hochman, is poised to prosecute violent offenders more aggressively than his predecessor, George Gascon, who had a more lenient approach to crime.

McBride expressed his discontent with California’s leadership, particularly targeting Governor Gavin Newsom. He mentioned federal assistance, noting President Trump’s involvement in deploying the National Guard and US Marines to help curb the violence, stating that this support is greatly valued by the LAPD.

Amid an environment characterized by rising taxes and, unfortunately, crime, McBride opined that Newsom’s actions contribute to the problems at hand. He hinted that the governor appears focused on his potential presidential ambitions for 2028 while failing to address the ongoing issues effectively.

Moreover, he criticized Mayor Karen Bass, suggesting she seems overwhelmed and politically cautious. “I think it’s crucial for her to acknowledge the serious situation at hand,” he remarked, hinting that she should consider reaching out for federal assistance.

A spokesperson for Newsom replied, claiming that violent and property crimes in California have actually decreased in recent years, contrary to public perception. They also argued that state taxes remain comparable to the national average.

Requests for comments from Mayor Bass’s office went unanswered.
