Phoebe Waller-Bridge has officially been installed as director of a Lara Croft TV series, with Amazon announcing that the show has been greenlit, but fans aren’t happy.
Waller-Bridge most recently starred alongside Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Huntsman,” playing a fiercely feminist character who constantly chastises Ford.
“So is this Amazon version of Lara Croft going to be more of the same? Just an obnoxious female boss who exists solely to belittle her male colleagues and co-stars? We’ll see,” said Lauren Chen, who called her own Indiana Jones film “a pretty spectacular flop.”
Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider video game has also faced criticism from fans around the world who believe Croft becomes less appealing with each new version of the game.
“There might be some Tomb Raider fans who are thinking, ‘What’s the big deal? I’ll just ignore the series and play the game, because at least the game will still be fun.’ Well, I don’t think so,” Chen says.
“As people have pointed out, it seems like there’s really been an effort to make Lara Croft uglier and uglier, because, of course, because of feminism, we as women are now somehow made to feel uncomfortable by attractive women.”
Not only have video games as a whole come to cater to woke ideology, but Croft in particular once represented the “pinnacle” of female attractiveness in video games.
“As we’ve seen with Gamergate and more recently the Sweet Baby debacle, the gaming industry is by no means safe from awakening,” Chen said.
It’s not just Croft’s charm that’s under attack, but her personality as well.
The game Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth attracted negative attention after developers claimed they were changing Croft from a “tomb raider to a truth seeker” to escape the game’s “colonial past.”
“I’m not kidding, this is real,” Chen said.
