Lara Trump told NBC News in an interview Tuesday that she believes Republicans are done contesting the 2020 presidential election. Her comments came despite the fact that her father-in-law, former President Donald Trump, continues to campaign on baseless claims that he lost the election due to voter fraud.
“Well, I think it’s past that. I think it’s in the past,” said the recently elected Republican National Committee (RNC) co-chairman. In an interview. “We learned a lot. We certainly took a lot of notes.”
“The past is the past, and unfortunately we had to learn some tough lessons in 2020. Trust me, we learned them and we will share them with everyone across this country. states, and in fact every legal vote was counted,” she continued.
Lara Trump’s comments, just weeks after assuming the RNC’s leadership position, signal a shift in the Republican Party. The RNC laid off more than 60 people in early March, including senior staff. In an interview with NBC, Lara Trump said she referred to staffing that the party “probably doesn’t need.”
With former President Trump the only remaining Republican presidential candidate heading into the November election, the RNC will focus on encouraging Republican voters to embrace new ideas about voting, especially ideas that her father-in-law has previously denounced. Lara Trump said.
Earlier this month, he said the RNC’s top priority was “protecting the vote” in this fall’s election.
“When we look at it, we think, [the] “In the actual election, we must start encouraging Republican voters to take actions like trusting early voting and voting by mail,” she said Tuesday. “These are ways that we can actually maintain a significant lead heading into Election Day, something that Republicans have traditionally avoided.”
Before taking the party’s top spot, Lara Trump said she would spend “every penny” of RNC money to return Trump to the White House. A big question surrounding the leadership change is whether the RNC will fund Trump’s mounting legal costs.
Lara Trump said the RNC “does not support paying his legal costs.” She later made a pitch to Republican voters, asking them to trust that their donations would be spent properly.
“Trust me, I’m Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law. I’m going to make sure every dollar goes to causes that Republican voters care about,” she said. “We obviously want to elect Donald Trump at the top, and then of course we want to elect Republicans all the way down.”
