Lara Trump has announced that she will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as votes are expected in the Florida Senate race.
Lara was first elected as RNC co-chairs along with Michael Whatley in March, replacing former chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. Lara is reportedly eyeing a Florida Senate seat after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Republican Sen. Marco Rubio to be secretary of state in his next administration.
Mr. Lara is one of the candidates to replace Mr. Rubio and confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday that he would “seriously consider” a Senate bid.
Since taking on her role at the RNC, Lara has set her sights on exceeding fundraising records, strengthening election integrity measures, and increasing turnout among low-propensity voters.
“We accomplished all three,” Lara said in a post on the spoke.
The announcement comes less than a month after Rubio's appointment sparked rumors about potential successors. Given Mr. Rubio's likely confirmation, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced that his successor, who will serve in the Senate until 2026, will hold a special election to fill the seat until 2028. need to be appointed.
Mr. Lara is one of the candidates to replace Mr. Rubio and confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday that he would “seriously consider” a Senate bid.
“I don't know exactly what it would look like if I were completely transparent” Lara said Regarding possible Senate appointments. “And if it's a practical thing for me, I want to get all the information possible. But yeah, I'll consider it 100 percent.”
Florida currently faces a total of three legislative vacancies. In addition to Rubio, Florida Republican Rep. Mike Walz and former Rep. Matt Gaetz have both been named to the incoming administration. Gaetz, who was hired as attorney general, resigned from the House after his nomination and later withdrew his candidacy altogether. Walz, who was nominated to be National Security Adviser, announced that he would resign on January 20, the day President Trump was inaugurated.
