Lara Trump was correct; I expressed my apologies to her, but there was a background where both sides were saying ‘crazy things.’

Tapper Reflects on Lara Trump’s 2020 Comments

During a recent episode of the “Megyn Kelly Show” on SiriusXM, Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor and co-author of “Original Sin,” addressed Lara Trump’s remarks from a 2020 interview about President Joe Biden’s mental fitness. He mentioned that she apologized to him after her comment stirred controversy, which he suggested was taken out of context. The environment back then was charged, with both camps—Biden’s and Trump’s—making extreme accusations against each other. He specifically noted comments from Donald Trump Jr. implying serious accusations about Biden.

Tapper recounted, “I reached out to her a few months ago and apologized.” He believed their conversation went well and recalled Trump expressing that she wouldn’t mock anyone’s stutter.

He explained further: “When I first saw Lara Trump’s remarks, it wasn’t until January 2020 that the comments were interpreted as laughing at Joe Biden’s stutter. I found that interpretation in the Daily Mail. After those comments surfaced, they drew significant criticism, including an op-ed in the New York Times that called her out.” He acknowledged the broader context surrounding the heated political atmosphere back in October 2020, with each side hurling accusations at the other, including wild claims from figures like Don Jr. He stated, “While her remarks may be viewed differently now, I recognize that my comments weren’t adequate. I take responsibility for that.”
