Bernie Kerik Remembered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral

On Friday, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan was packed with thousands who came to honor Bernie Kerik, remembering him as a heroic figure who “took command” during the events of September 11th.

The former NYPD commissioner was celebrated by his son, Joey Kelik, who described him as a constant presence in the family, even amidst the pressures of leading the city’s police force through crises.

“He was raw, authentic, everything you wanted from your dad,” Joey reflected.

Joey noted that while Kerik was often in the spotlight, he cherished his role as a father more than anything else.

At the same time, Kerik was deeply committed to his demanding job, confronting the challenges of his responsibilities, especially during and after the attacks in 2001.

“He took command but didn’t flinch or retreat,” Joey, now 41, mentioned.

He added, “He would always tell me how proud he was of me, and I had to remind him how proud I was of him too.”

Numerous significant figures gathered to celebrate Kerik’s life, who died at the age of 69 after being hospitalized due to heart disease. His passing occurred on Thursday.

Among the mourners were FBI Director Kash Patel and his wife, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and his son Andrew, who appointed Kerik as the NYPD commissioner in 2000. Giuliani was seen interacting with former officer Ray Kelly, his eventual successor.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jennifer Tish were present at the funeral, along with Deputy Mayor Randy Maestro and NYPD Vice Commissioner Tania Kinsella, forming a lineup in front of the flag bearer before Kerik’s casket was brought inside the church.

Throughout the funeral service, a procession featuring motorcycles, marching bands, and numerous NYPD officers marked the occasion, reflecting Kerik’s impactful career. He earned the nickname “Beatcop Commissioner” for his hands-on leadership, making five arrests during his brief tenure, including securing convictions related to a stolen vehicle incident in Harlem.

Kerik’s law enforcement journey spanned 40 years, during which he oversaw key national security efforts as well as the NYPD’s response to 9/11, guiding rescue and recovery efforts.

He is survived by three children, his wife Hara Mathil Kerik, and the son of his ex-wife, Jacqueline Lelena.
