Explosion at Valero Refinery in Port Arthur
A significant explosion occurred at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur on Monday, releasing large clouds of black smoke over the city and triggering an emergency response throughout Jefferson County. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
The incident, which took place shortly after noon, rattled nearby neighborhoods and led local authorities to urge residents to remain indoors. Firefighting teams and hazardous materials units were quickly dispatched to manage the situation. The resulting smoke cloud was visible for miles, raising concerns about safety in one of the country’s major refining hubs.
The public information officer for the Port Arthur Fire Department stated that the cause of the explosion is still unknown. However, Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stevens confirmed that there were no reported injuries and that no evacuations were necessary.
Following the explosion, officials moved swiftly to alert nearby residents. Initially, those on the west side of the town were advised to stay indoors. Shortly thereafter, the warning expanded to include residents in Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, and areas to the south of Highway 73. Officials continued to monitor air quality while managing the fire response.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for Pleasure Island and Sabine Pass, specifically for locations south of Highway 73 and west of Stalwell Boulevard.
According to reports, all employees at the refinery are accounted for and safe.
Valero’s Port Arthur facility is among the ten largest refineries in the United States, with a daily output of around 435,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
