Large Overnight Drone Attacks Lead to Power Failures in Ukraine

Latest Developments in Russia’s Drone and Missile Attacks on Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine – Recent drone and missile strikes by Russia on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have led to widespread power outages and restrictions throughout the country, officials report. Ukraine’s Prime Minister labeled these actions as “organized energy terrorism.”

This latest attack is part of Russia’s nearly daily assaults on Ukraine’s power grid, coinciding with the onset of harsh winter weather. Reports indicate at least three fatalities, including a 7-year-old girl, while around 17 individuals sustained injuries, among them children aged between 2 and 16.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that over 650 drones and more than 50 various missiles were used during the assault.

Urban areas in Ukraine heavily depend on centralized public infrastructure for essential services like water, sewage, and heating, rendering them nonfunctional during power outages. Nearly four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, the ongoing offensive seems intended to weaken Ukrainian morale as well as disrupt arms production and other military activities.

“Russia continues its systematic energy terrorism, targeting the lives and dignity of Ukrainians just as winter approaches. Their aim is to plunge Ukraine into darkness, but we’re determined to keep the lights on,” emphasized Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko.

He further remarked that to combat this terrorism, Ukraine requires enhanced air defenses, stricter sanctions, and maximum pressure on Russia, noting the futility of current U.S.-led diplomatic attempts to encourage peace talks.

In the southern Zaporizhzhya region, 17 individuals were reported injured, including a 2-year-old girl. Local authorities mentioned that a man was rescued from the rubble but unfortunately did not survive. A second casualty was also reported in Zaporizhia.

A 7-year-old girl in the Vinnytsia region succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, as reported by the regional governor, Natalia Zobolotna.

Additionally, in the western Lviv region, near the Polish border, two energy infrastructure facilities sustained damage due to the attacks.

The Polish military has responded by deploying Polish and allied NATO aircraft as a precaution following the Russian attack on Ukrainian territory. The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency has subsequently closed regional airports in Radom and Lublin to facilitate military operations.
