Large Pacific Octopus Grabs Six-Year-Old at Texas Aquarium

A recent incident involving an octopus at the San Antonio Aquarium in Texas has raised concerns for a mother regarding the safety of other children and animals.

In early July, Britney Tallinn and her 6-year-old son, Leo, visited the aquarium, a place they had frequented before, but this time was notably different.

Tallinn recounted, “Leo put his arm in the tank, and the octopus wrapped its tentacles around him and wouldn’t let go. I tried to pull him down, but the octopus came towards us.”

She called for assistance, and eventually, a few staff members arrived, but it took about three of them to detach the octopus from Leo’s arm.

According to reports, the giant Pacific octopus was in a touch tank, and Leo had interacted with it previously. Sadly, it left a small bruise along his arm, which was visible in photos.

Tallinn didn’t label the event as an attack and mentioned that she and Leo returned to see the octopus again.

However, she pointed out that she had never received warnings about the potential for such interactions before her son engaged with the octopus. This prompted her to share her experience on social media as a warning to others.

Leo remarked that the mark on his arm wasn’t painful, and they later learned that the octopus was aging, nearing the end of its life span. Tallinn said, “So we went to say goodbye, making sure he had that chance. Our main goal is to protect these octopuses and the other animals in the aquarium.”

Recently, the aquarium shared a video illustrating how octopuses can cause bruising. The clip featured staff members playfully engaging with the octopus, highlighting how strong its suction cups can be.

Craig Perke, director of animal care at the San Antonio Zoo, commented that octopuses are typically gentle. He suggested that the octopus in Leo’s case may have been overstimulated.
