Drone Attacks in Kyiv
In Kyiv, Ukrainian forces and officials reported that Russia launched a series of drone attacks overnight, targeting residential buildings and causing extensive fires across the city.
Timur Tokachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, noted on social media that debris from a downed drone ignited fires in the Oboronsky and Sviatoshynskyi districts. He also mentioned that several vehicles were damaged by falling drone fragments.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko shared via the Telegram app that medical teams were dispatched to the Sviatoshynskyi district, which is located west of the city center, to provide assistance to those affected.
Reporters from Reuters noted hearing multiple explosions, likely due to air defense systems attempting to intercept the drones. There wasn’t any immediate information available about the full extent of the attack, but air raid alerts were issued for the surrounding areas and eastern Ukraine for about an hour after midnight local time (2100 GMT).
This incident came during the commemorative period from May 8 to 10, which marks the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in World War II. As the situation unfolded, there were no immediate comments from Moscow regarding the strikes, particularly with the uncertainty over whether both sides might pause military actions.
On Monday, Russia announced a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10, and Kyiv responded by proposing a 30-day cessation of hostilities.
Both Russia and Ukraine have claimed not to target civilians in the conflict that began over three years ago with Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Ihor Tablet, the governor of Cherkassy region in central Ukraine, reported that the Russian drone strikes led to multiple fires later in the evening. Preliminary reports indicated that there were no injuries related to these incidents.
