Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson sets WNBA single-season scoring record

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A'ja Wilson broke the WNBA's season scoring record just before the start of the first half of the Las Vegas Aces' game against the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night.

Wilson made a jump shot from the free throw line with 26.4 seconds left in the second quarter to surpass the previous record of 939 points set by Jewell Loyd in 2023.

The Aces' two-time league MVP entered the game averaging 27.3 points and 11.9 rebounds.

She finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Las Vegas Won 86-75.

On Wednesday night, A'ja Wilson went for the basket while being guarded by Indiana's Temi Fagbenle, scoring two of her 27 points. AP

Wilson thanked his teammates for helping him break the record.

“I don't want to sound like a cliché, but I wouldn't have had anything without all my teammates and I'm so grateful to play with so many selfless ladies,” she said. “My teammates are my heartbeat. They have my back. If they don't pass me the ball, I can't score.”

“So, the points are great. The points are always going to be there. I'm never going to stop shooting, but the group we have in this locker room is what makes me really happy.”

Wilson only needed 35 more games to surpass the mark set by Lloyd in 38 games last year.

Wilson's previous high was 912 points in 40 games last season.

She has 956 points this season and could become the first player in league history to reach 1,000 points in a single season.

“It feels great, now people are going to stop talking about it,” Wilson said. “It just felt like it was dragging on and on and on and on, so I'm just happy to get it done. It was a lot of fun.”
