Sentencing of Las Vegas Teenagers for Hit-and-Run Death
In August 2023, two men from Las Vegas faced consequences for their involvement in a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a retired California police chief. Jesus Ayala, aged 20, and Jazamir Keyes, 18, took separate guilty pleas in October.
Ayala, who was 17 at the time of the crime, received a sentence of 20 years to life in prison, while Keyes, who was 16, was sentenced to 18 years. Additionally, Ayala was given an extra two to ten years due to battery charges associated with the incident.
Judge Jacqueline Bruce highlighted the profound impact of the crime, stating, “The Probst family not only had to grapple with the murder itself but also witness the depths of pain their loved ones endured. It’s a different level of suffering.” She condemned their actions, saying, “There is no excuse for what you did or the damage caused.”
Prior to the sentencing, two of the victim’s children spoke in court. Michael Probst expressed his sorrow, reflecting on how their father’s life was cut short. “The moment I learned he was gone, it felt like my heart had been ripped away. Our family has changed forever, and that heartbreak will remain with us.” His sister, Taylor, shared how the actions of Ayala and Keyes robbed their father of milestones he would never experience, like walking her down the aisle.
Probst’s widow, Crystal, voiced her anguish over the loss, emphasizing that the actions of the two men had devastating consequences for her family. “They made a choice that took Andy from us, an act so cruel it shattered not just my heart but that of everyone who cared about him.”
Ayala and Keyes decided not to make statements during their court appearance. Events unfolded on August 14, 2023, when Probst was riding his bicycle and was struck from behind, leading to fatal injuries. Video evidence captured the moment, including laughter from the passenger as they documented the crash.
According to reports, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department discovered this footage on August 29, 2023, after Keyes allegedly shared it online. The video reportedly showed the suspects expressing amusement as they fled the scene.
Reports indicated Ayala displayed little remorse when apprehended, confidently asserting he would face minimal repercussions. The pair is also accused of previously injuring another cyclist before tragically striking and killing Probst, as outlined by the prosecutors.
