A new video captures the moment Las Vegas police shot an armed suspect after he allegedly opened fire in a gym, resulting in one death and several injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspect as 34-year-old Daniel Ortega, who was shot on a Friday afternoon and subsequently died. Had he survived, he would have faced charges including attempted murder and multiple counts related to the use of a deadly weapon.
This incident marks the third police-involved shooting in Las Vegas this year, all of which have been fatal. The shooting occurred around 1:30 PM when Ortega entered the Las Vegas Athletic Club with a rifle.
According to police, Ortega passed by gym-goers before confronting an employee at the front desk. Witnesses report that he exchanged words with staff before he raised his weapon and began firing.
As Ortega moved deeper into the gym, he continued to shoot until his rifle malfunctioned. Investigators found he discharged 24 rounds during the ordeal.
After fleeing the building, Ortega was shot by police and fell to the ground, where officers took him into custody.
Once in custody, Ortega was transported to a hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. Meanwhile, three individuals in the gym suffered gunshot wounds; one was declared dead at the scene, and the others were taken for medical treatment. A fourth victim later went to a hospital with severe injuries.
An investigation into the shooting is currently ongoing.
