Las Vegas Strip shooter Omar Talley sentenced to life without parole

A man convicted of fatally shooting two Northern California women near the Las Vegas Strip nearly eight years ago has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Omar Talley, 38, was sentenced Tuesday after being reprimanded by a judge for his lack of remorse, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

According to the newspaper, Talley’s lawyer claimed his client had apologized to the victim’s family, but Talley interrupted, saying he was only expressing “condolences” and had no involvement in the killing. He again insisted that he had not.

According to court records, Talley initially faced the death penalty in the case, but prosecutors withdrew the possibility of the death penalty before the trial began.

He is accused of killing Melissa Yvette Mendoza and Jennifer Margarita Chicas, both 27, and injuring Chicas’ brother-in-law Jerod Jackson in February 2016.

Relatives said the victims were in Las Vegas for a family celebration. Jackson survived the shooting and testified against Talley.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the victims got into an argument with Talley in a parking lot on the west side of the Strip, and shots were fired.

Chicas and Mendoza, both from the San Francisco Bay Area, died from gunshot wounds to the chest, police said.

According to the arrest report, Talley told police he had been drinking and smoking marijuana the night of the shooting, but that he had little recollection of what happened.
