Last full-size Kmart in US to close

The last full-sized Kmart store in the continental United States is reportedly set to close in October, leaving only one downsized store.

The department store chain, which operated about 2,300 locations in the early 1990s, will close its full-size store in Bridgehampton, New York, on Oct. 20. Newsday reports: Quoting the employees there:

That means the small Miami Kmart store will be the last remaining in the U.S. Kmart, now owned by Transformco, also has three stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

TransformCo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business on Monday, but a spokesman for Kimco Realty, which owns the shopping centers that house both Kmart stores in New York and Florida, told Newsday that the Bridgehampton store will indeed close.

According to Newsday, the Bridgehampton Kmart store has been in business for 25 years.

The first Kmart discount department store opened in Garden City, Michigan in 1962, according to the TransformCo website.

The company filed for bankruptcy in 2002, merged with Sears a few years later, then filed for bankruptcy again in 2018.

The other remaining Kmart store in the continental United States is located at Kendale Lakes Plaza in Miami.

According to the Miami Herald, Kmart has leased nearly all of its space to home goods retailer At Home, which has now downsized to occupy what was once the original store's gardening department.

A leasing representative for Kimco Realty told the newspaper that Kmart has a “long-term lease” for the Kendale Lakes store.
