Lawler criticizes GOP approach to IVF and abortion: ‘People want reasonableness’

Rep. Mike Lawler (RN.Y.) on Sunday criticized the Republican Party’s approach to reproductive rights, saying the party should do more to understand where average Americans stand on these issues. Ta.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Dana Bash told Lawler, one of the few House Republicans who supports legislation protecting in vitro fertilization (IVF), that his fellow Republicans were on the wrong side of the issue. I asked him if he was standing there. .

“If we’re going to be a pro-life party, we have to fight to protect families’ ability to parent, which is ultimately what this is about. Millions of people… “Americans are struggling with infertility and are turning to IVF to ensure they have the joy of parenthood,” he said.

Lawler also said the “political fallout” from the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year, which ruled that frozen embryos are children, continues, leading to the temporary suspension of some IVF services in the state. He also mentioned that.

Lawmakers subsequently passed legislation addressing civil and criminal liability for IVF providers, prompting some providers to resume services.

But the backlash against the state high court’s ruling still has lingering effects. Just last week, a Democratic congressman flipped a Republican-held district by a wide margin after making reproductive rights a centerpiece of his campaign.

“I think the decision that was made in Alabama was wrong. I think Congress obviously moved quickly, but there are also political implications of that. People want rationality. They don’t want extremism. No,” Lawlor said.

Lawler said lawmakers need to listen more to their constituents.

“Personally, I’m pro-life, but I believe there are exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother,” Lawler said. “And I’ve said very clearly that I will never support a federal ban on abortion. This is something that will be decided at the state level, and it will be decided by the voters.”

“And I think we need to do a better job of listening and understanding people’s views on these issues,” he added.

“I believe that IVF is extremely important to families across this country and should be protected. And I believe that some states have not enacted laws to protect IVF. Given that fact, I signed federal legislation to do just that.”
