Proposed Renaming of Thorney Mountain in Georgia
A North Georgia landmark might soon bear the name of President Donald Trump, thanks to a resolution proposed by state lawmaker U.S. Rep. David Clark (R-Buford). The lawmaker introduced the idea on Tuesday, aiming to change Thorney Mountain in Forsyth County—situated just under 80 miles northeast of Atlanta—to “Trump Mountain.”
In his statement, Clark emphasized, “President Trump is one of the most transformative presidents in our nation’s history,” explaining further on social media that the name change is intended to honor his legacy of making America great again.
The initiative has not been without its critics. Many expressed confusion and skepticism online, with one commenter questioning if it was meant as satire. Another remarked, “Transformative is not a compliment.”
There’s also been mention of the mountain’s historical ties to Native American communities, which has led some voices to call into question whether renaming the mountain is appropriate. Originally, Thorney Mountain was named after a prominent Native American chief, adding layers to the discussion.
Despite the mixed reactions, there are supporters of the proposal. A Trump supporter noted, “He certainly earned it. No president since Lincoln has faced more headwinds than he has.”
Clark, who is also campaigning to become the next lieutenant governor of Georgia, has yet to provide further comments following the public responses.
