Lawmakers in New York are set to approve budget bills, though even they are uncertain about their content: ‘Let us explore further’

New York Lawmakers Poised to Vote on Budget Amid Uncertainty

ALBANY — State legislators are set to start voting on a significant budget package for New York on Wednesday, though there’s little clarity on the details of the spending bill, even among lawmakers and the public.

The extensive budget document, consisting of thousands of pages, is expected to be made available on Tuesday night. This tight timeline means that both national and local lawmakers will have only hours to review the details before they cast their votes.

There have been concerns regarding the $254 billion figure that was announced last week.

“The senators haven’t actually seen the budget bill yet. We’re being told they’re on track to start voting this week,” said a concerned source. “We should take our time with these bills. Let’s understand what we’re voting on for the people of New York,” urged Ortt.

The state constitution mandates a three-day waiting period before voting on newly introduced bills, such as the budget. However, this requirement can be bypassed with a “message of necessity” from Governor Hochul, which allows for expedited voting.

“The governor is manipulating the process to push through the budget,” claimed North Country Senator Mark Walchyk (R-Jefferson), who has introduced a bill aimed at preventing the use of necessity messages in the budget process.

The budget process in the state is often criticized for its lack of transparency, with negotiations primarily occurring out of the public eye between the governor and legislative leaders.

Last year, state officials finalized a surprising revamp of the Medicaid Home Program without prior disclosure or discussion of the proposals involved. The approved changes have led to allegations of bid rigging and litigation issues, resulting in unpaid wages for home care workers.
