Lawmakers on Capitol Hill express their gratitude this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Reflections from Capitol Hill

Thanksgiving is a cherished occasion for many in the U.S., and those working at the Capitol certainly feel the spirit of gratitude as well.

Lawmakers from both parties shared their thoughts with Fox News Digital, expressing thanks, particularly towards family. For instance, Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) and Erin Houchin (R-Ind.) conveyed their appreciation.

“It’s genuinely a blessing to serve in this role,” Houchin remarked, adding a sense of fulfillment to her work.

Other congress members expressed eagerness to escape the bustle of Washington. “I’m thrilled to be in Massachusetts, feeling thankful for that… I’m looking forward to stepping away from the ongoing whirlwind here,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.

When asked about his plans at home, McGovern noted, “I participate in a walk for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts each year, so I’ll be walking 43 miles over Monday and Tuesday.” He joked about it being potentially his last public appearance.

Others are looking forward to quality family time as well, including House Budget Chairwoman Jodi Arrington (R-Texas) and former House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), who recently celebrated a remarriage in June 2023.

“I’m thankful for so much. I have a wonderful new wife, and we’ve been married for two and a half years,” Hoyer shared, reflecting on his past. “My first wife passed away in 1997, making my single years quite long.” He concluded that he is now very happy, remarking, “We have 17 grandchildren, all healthy and thriving.”

Arrington, set to retire after a decade in Congress at the end of 2026, expressed her gratitude for her time in office. “I’m thankful for ten years filled with incredible experiences, and I look forward to being more present with my family, rather than being a leader in their homes,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) reflected on the essence of Thanksgiving, suggesting it’s a good reminder to cultivate gratitude throughout the year. “I’m most grateful for the personal blessings in my life. Gratitude is an essential habit for everyone,” he emphasized, adding that it can be beneficial even in tough times.

When discussing favorite Thanksgiving traditions, Houchin fondly recalled a past family tradition of decorating popsicle sticks, “which we don’t do anymore, but it was memorable.” Luna mentioned, “I’m binge-watching Harry Potter,” while Hoyer enthusiastically chimed in, “I appreciate turkey and gravy.” Arrington looked forward to indulging in “a lot of food and watching soccer” during the holiday.
