TikTok Video by Rep. Suhas Subramanyam Sparks Controversy
Representative Suhas Subramanyam from Virginia has made a splash on TikTok by participating in the “Aura Agriculture” trend. He shared a video of himself dancing alone on the Congressional subway, captioning it, “OMW to hold this administration accountable.”
In the clip, Subramanyam, wearing sunglasses, strikes various poses and waves his arms before locking eyes with the camera. However, reactions to his video have been mixed, with many viewers labeling it tone-deaf or hypocritical.
Some left-leaning commenters expressed frustration with the perceived inaction of Democrats during Donald Trump’s presidency, specifically targeting Subramanyam and his fellow lawmakers in Virginia’s 10th District. Comments ranged from, “By doing nothing…” to outright calls for him to take actionable steps instead of just posting on social media.
Critics have drawn connections between this video and Subramanyam’s recent voting history, specifically his decision to vote against a resolution to impeach Trump for “high crimes and misdemeanors.” This resolution, introduced by Texas Representative Al Green, ultimately failed.
Additionally, comments on the video have been harsh, with one user writing, “-1000 Aura,” and another sarcastically noting, “Our taxpayer money is working so hard…” The top comment simply stated, “This feels strange IDK.”
Some commenters went further, criticizing the disconnect between their representatives’ actions and the needs of average Americans. One user remarked, “I’m not trying to be rude, but this is less than what we need,” emphasizing that outreach is crucial now more than ever.
Subramanyam, who previously served as a technology advisor under Obama and is the first South Asian elected to the Virginia Legislature, is generally seen as a moderate Democrat. He won his seat in the 2024 elections, often incorporating themes of immigration into his political messaging.
The trend of “aura farming,” popular among younger generations, involves adopting effortless yet cool poses while remaining still. It follows a viral video of an 11-year-old Indonesian boy who confidently danced with a serious expression while wearing sunglasses.
Subramanyam’s TikTok was set to the soundtrack of Melly Mike’s “Young Black & Rich.” A request for comment was made to both his office and TikTok regarding the backlash.
