Reflections on Recent Events and Their Impact
Throughout my nearly 40-year career in film and television, I’ve been passionate about supporting various causes. I’ve collaborated with a wide range of people—ethnic and racial minorities, women, LGBTQ communities—long before the term “woke” was popular. My intention was never to fulfill some obligation; it simply reflects how I see the world.
Then, on October 8, 2023, just a day after the tragic attack in Israel, I noticed an unsettling silence. My phone wasn’t buzzing like usual, not a single call from the diverse community I’ve worked alongside for decades. There were no simple check-ins asking if I was alright or expressing concern for my loved ones in Israel. Instead, those who typically share their thoughts on social media opted for vague phrases like “I’m trying to figure it out” and “It’s a complex situation.”
But is it really that complicated? Thousands of terrorists invaded Israel, committing horrific acts against innocent people who were merely sleeping. What’s unclear about that?
Shockingly, many of my colleagues didn’t just choose to stay silent—they began justifying these acts of terror. They started wearing red handprint pins, a symbol associated with the brutal deaths of two Israeli reservists. It’s disheartening how some of the very industry that promotes inclusivity has turned away when my community needed support. To add insult to injury, many have pointed fingers at Israel as if they bore the full responsibility for these atrocities.
Feeling compelled to act, I took the initiative to develop the limited scripted series “Red Alert” on Paramount+. We created this project to honor the experiences of those who suffered, both the victims and the survivors of these unspeakable events.
The goal was clear: to tell their stories and shine a light on the often-overlooked heroes amid chaos. We aimed for a narrative that resonates universally—stories of families in crisis, tales of bravery in the face of danger. One highlights a mother who risks everything to save her son while helping her neighbors and another focuses on an Arab family who heroically protected an IDF unit. Surprisingly, many don’t grasp the multicultural fabric of Israel, where Arabs also suffered during these attacks. These people transformed into everyday heroes under dire circumstances.
This project became a deeply transformative journey. The actors all portrayed real individuals and spent time with us on set, including those who lost loved ones. It’s hard not to come away from this experience changed.
When you watch “Red Alert,” I truly hope it moves you and contributes positively to the ongoing dialogue. To my friends who may have misunderstood the intent behind this series, I hope it encourages them to seek out the undeniable truths.
As time moves forward, the details of each news cycle may fade, but “Red Alert” will stand as a testament to the struggles and everyday heroism witnessed in Israel.
