Chicago Train Attack Sparks Outrage Over Criminal Justice Failures
A violent career criminal, arrested for setting a young woman on fire on a Chicago train, has an alarming history with over 70 arrests. Federal authorities are expressing their outrage, stating he “doesn’t need to be on the streets.”
Lawrence Reed, 50, faces federal terrorism charges after a shocking incident on Monday night, where he was filmed pouring gasoline on a 26-year-old woman, chasing her to her car, and igniting her. During the attack, he allegedly shouted, “Live and burn, bitch,” as the victim suffered immensely.
Adding to the severity, Reed’s lengthy criminal record was unveiled, showing he was already on pre-trial release for an aggravated battery charge when this incident occurred.
Christopher Amon, an ATF Special Agent in Charge, remarked on the situation, stating, “Lawrence Reed had no need to be on the street given his violent criminal history and pending criminal cases.” Amon further lamented the repeated chances Reed has had, leading to a situation where an innocent person is now fighting for their life in the hospital.
According to records, Reed has been arrested 71 times in Cook County and has been convicted in 13 of those cases. At the time of the awful incident, he was under electronic monitoring related to a prior assault on a hospital social worker.
Prosecutors had requested that Reed remain incarcerated, but the judge’s decision allowed him to walk free in the city—a shocking outcome, to say the least.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros noted that he was unaware Reed had been declared mentally incompetent previously, despite his past actions creating serious safety concerns.
Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke out forcefully after Reed’s arrest, calling it an “absolute failure” of the justice and mental health systems. He emphasized that this individual had numerous felony charges over three decades, highlighting a clear case of severe mental illness and danger to both himself and the public. “Now we have a woman fighting for her life. This is a tragedy that shouldn’t have happened,” he expressed.
The unnamed victim remains in critical condition, suffering from severe burns on her head and body.
This attack has drawn comparisons to another shocking incident—the fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on a North Carolina train last August. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commented, “This horrific attack shows we need to take community safety seriously. Our city can’t afford to see another tragedy like that of Irina Zalutka.”
