Marine Le Pen’s Political Future Uncertain Amid Appeal
French populist leader Marine Le Pen has indicated that she may step aside in the campaign to succeed President Emmanuel Macron, supporting Vice President Jordan Bardera if her appeal against a five-year election ban does not succeed.
The outcome of the appeal, regarding her controversial ban linked to the alleged misuse of EU party funds for the National Rally (RN), is expected in about three months. This case is currently pending in the Court of Appeal.
Le Pen’s ban was implemented immediately, instead of upholding the presumption of innocence typically afforded during an appeal in France. As a result, should an election be held today, she wouldn’t be allowed to participate, despite still having legal options to contest the ruling.
Colleagues have come together to support her, claiming that the legal actions are an attempt to hinder the party’s progress. They stated that Le Pen, the de facto candidate for the National Rally in the 2027 presidential election, would back Bardera if the appeal does not go her way.
“I think it’s quite clear,” she said, confirming her support for Bardera. “It’s a tough decision, but it seems to be the best move for the country.”
Le Pen also mentioned her intention to continue appealing to the Court of Cassation, although she recognized that the timing could jeopardize her chances for the 2027 election.
“I will push my appeal to the end,” she asserted, yet acknowledged the reality, saying, “If the decision comes in September, I won’t prolong this because I’m committed to advancing our agenda.”
While a ban can often crush the chances of an outsider party such as the National Rally, the party appears to have a strong alternative plan.
Interestingly, recent polls have shown that Bardera might actually have a better chance at winning the presidency than Le Pen, performing well against various opponents in head-to-head matchups.
Although he is only 30, Bardera has been active in National Rally politics for over a decade, leading the party to significant victories, particularly in last year’s European Parliament elections.
Bardera has become a notable figure in France, even releasing a recent book titled *What the French Want*.
In April, Bardera confirmed his intention to run in 2027 as a “Plan B” if Le Pen’s situation prevents her from participating. “Right now, it’s crucial for us to stay united. There’s no question that Marine Le Pen is my candidate, and if she were blocked, I’d be ready to step in.”
