Leaked Documents Say Punchbowl Trades Offered Coverage for Money

Recent reports from Breaking Points indicate that Punchbowl News, a Washington, D.C. news outlet founded by a former Politico journalist, is allegedly offering corporate sponsors the ability to purchase editing capabilities for significant sums, potentially reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A screenshot shared by Emily Jashinsky from Breaking Points reveals an interactive feature that allows for the exploration of various topics and podcasts agreed upon by sponsors and the outlet.

In addition, it’s reported that companies may pay up to $210,000 per week for sponsorship of the main newsletter, according to allegations from the marketing materials.

Screenshots provided in the Breaking Points video highlight a Venn diagram illustrating the financial benefits for advertisers. One side lists “Punchbowl News” which is associated with “editorial expertise, audience trust, community,” while the opposite side features “your brand” alongside “thought leaders, authentic, messaging, true partners.” The diagram’s center includes an arrow pointing to “Custom Products.”

In response, Punchbowl stated that the diagram is outdated, suggesting that Breaking Points is referring to pricing that no longer applies. However, the diagram contains a quote from House Speaker Mike Johnson dated March 11, leading Jashinsky to assert that the chart was indeed shared recently.

Jashinsky remarked that while Punchbowl may assert that its funding is free from partisan bias, it’s hard to ignore that its sponsors are ideological entities seeking to exert influence for their causes, which raises questions about the outlet’s objectivity.

Punchbowl has had prominent sponsors in the past, including firms like Goldman Sachs, Google, Meta, IBM, Amazon, and others.
