“My sources say President Biden has agreed to step down as the Democratic nominee and could step down as early as this weekend. His speech has been written and it is his intention to remain in office as president,” Halperin said, adding that Biden “will not confirm Vice President Harris as his successor.”
“They are hopeful that Harris would support an open process in which she and several other candidates would hold a convention in Chicago to select the Democratic presidential nominee,” he continued, noting that Harris is “already considering potential running mates that include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.”
Halperin then explained how the voting process works.
“Under the agreement that’s been discussed between the president and senior Democratic officials, the regular delegates will be allowed to vote on the first ballot. The regular delegates will vote on the first ballot. If there’s no winner on the first ballot, then so-called superdelegates will be allowed to vote on the second ballot.”
Halperin explained that the decision was made hastily “due to high-level pressure from Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and many of President Biden’s senior aides.”
“This is basically an intraparty coup,” Dave says.
