Rapper Kendrick Lamar gave a surprise speech at Compton College’s graduation ceremony, telling graduates to “have the courage to be an independent thinker,” adding, “There’s nothing more valuable than that.”
“You have heart. You have the courage to be an independent thinker. There is nothing more valuable than being an independent thinker,” Lamar, who grew up in Compton, told the graduates on Saturday.

“This degree that you got here is just as valuable as any degree you get. It doesn’t matter what school it is, what institution it is. Compton College, this Compton degree is just as valuable,” the “Not Like Us” rapper continued. “Now it’s all about taking advantage of these resources and utilizing and applying what you’ve learned.”
Lamar went on to talk about the importance of building a relationship with God and speaking with him regularly.
“You’re going to have hardships and trials, just like you struggled to get here, but you have someone special behind you and around you, and that’s God, that’s it,” the “Humble” rapper said.
“No matter what happens, no matter what mistakes you make, no matter what shortcomings you have, he’s always there for you. When you win, he’s always there for you,” Lamar said.
The rapper continued.
Be patient with yourself, give yourself time to grow, and be grateful, because God is growing with you. Everybody here is going through a human life, a human experience, and God is going through it with you. So when you go through difficulties, God is with you, He is with you, He is talking to you. You just have to talk back.
I walk on the beach every day and I talk to God. I swear to God, I talk to God like I want to have those words inscribed on my grandma’s grave. I talk to God next to me, like the people I grew up with.
Lamar advised Compton graduates to speak to God “as if he knows you, as if you’ve known him since you were born.”
