Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is assisting President Donald Trump in selecting his next successor, acknowledging that Katie Zacharia, who resigned after just a week, wasn’t quite the right fit for the role.
In a conversation with Fox News, where she has recently taken up a contributor position, Leavitt stated, “Being the White House press secretary is a tough job. I know that because I did it.”
“Many people say it’s one of the hardest jobs in politics. It requires a lot of preparation. Sometimes you can’t really gauge how someone will perform until they’re out there,” she elaborated. “As the president remarked, we wish Katie the best. The position was clearly not meant for her.”
Leavitt expressed that the president is currently considering candidates for this “amazing job” filled with “incredible opportunities.”
“I’ve offered my help to the president in selecting someone who can serve him and the country well,” Leavitt mentioned.
When asked about the traits Trump should seek in his new press secretary, Leavitt said she would keep her advice private but was confident that Trump understands what the role demands.
“Nobody knows the press better than Donald Trump,” she commented. “He realizes he needs someone who is tough, intelligent, loyal, and capable of fighting for his policies.”
Having returned to her home state of New Hampshire, where she previously ran for Congress in 2022, Leavitt was also questioned about any plans for another run in 2028.
“I’m all set,” she replied. “I have no plans to run for office anytime soon, or at all really. I’m just enjoying time with my family, and we’re really excited about that.”
Leavitt made history as the first Generation Z candidate to clinch a Republican primary before losing the general election to the incumbent Democrat Representative Chris Pappas. She also holds the record as the youngest press secretary in U.S. history and was the first to give birth while in office earlier this year. After returning from maternity leave, she announced her resignation.
“Right now, my focus is on being a wife and mother to my two very young children. That’s why I made the decision to step away from Washington,” she concluded.
