Lee Corso’s “College GameDay” Journey Ends

Lee Corso’s long-standing tenure on “College GameDay” has come to a close after 38 years. His final appearance took place ahead of a much-anticipated game between Texas and Ohio State.

Corso, who celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this month, was a foundational figure on the show and a cherished part of the college football landscape.

On his last day, he donned a tuxedo and partook in his signature headgear ritual, where he wore a mascot’s head to predict game outcomes. He decided in favor of Ohio State, tossing aside the Brutus Buckeye mascot head as he made his prediction against Texas.

Earlier in the broadcast, Corso also picked LSU to win the national championship.

The “GameDay” team honored their longtime colleague while the crowd erupted in cheers. Throughout his participation, Corso made a remarkable 431 game picks.

His extensive career included 28 years as a college coach, starting in 1987, and he later served 17 seasons as a head coach.

Corso began with Chris Fowler and Craig James during ESPN’s very first “College GameDay” pre-game show back in 1993. This past April, ESPN announced his forthcoming retirement.

Reflecting on his journey, Corso expressed gratitude for the nearly four decades spent with ESPN and “College GameDay.” He noted, “I take with me treasured friendships, fond memories, and some unique experiences.”

After his retirement announcement, fellow travelers on a Southwest flight surprised him with applause and champagne, showcasing the impact he had on fans and colleagues alike. The show kicked off with chants of “We love Lee.”

For his final appearance, Corso remarked, “I’m wearing this… to go out in style,” emphasizing his classy outfit choice.

During the broadcast, Ohio State coach Ryan Day honored him with a Silver Buckeyes helmet that read “Coach Corso.” Additionally, the show featured a montage of Corso’s moments, with co-hosts sharing their favorite memories alongside well-wishes from celebrities and coaching legends.
